- Once in, leave the door open for up to a minute
- As the puppy starts getting used to it, slowly close the door
- When fully closed, leave the puppy in their for one minute
- Repeat this process regularly on the run up to the appointment, leaving the door closed a little longer each time
Handle them the way the groomer would
Also, they must get used to being touched in a way they wouldn’t normally, you can do this is by:
- Brushing your dog regularly
- Running your hands up and down their legs (front and back)
- Handling their ears, mouth and face
- Wiggling their toenails
- Holding their tail
Do all of these things gently and with the utmost care so as not to hurt or distress your dog.
How to prepare your adult dog for grooming
- Spend time with your dog more regularly
- Take them for a walk a few hours before the appointment
- Introduce them to objects the groomer will use, including:
- A brush
- Nail clippers
- Hair trimmers
- Hair dryer
- Water sprayer
How to prepare your rescue dog for grooming
- Visit the groomers a few times on the run up to the appointment
- Offer treats and relax with your dog while there
- Ask for a sample of shampoo to get your dog used to the smell
- Consider a muzzle, preferably a bucket muzzle so they can still pant and drink
